Penguin

“Flipper” the Penguin

  • 3mm Crochet Hook
  • 3 color 4-ply yarn  (4th for the beak, but can definitely use one of the color), I used white (RedHeart Soft), Light blue (Stitch by Nicole), Aqua (Crafters Secrete), all weight 4
  • Tapestry needle

Terms:

  • sc: Single Crochet
  • st: Stitch
  • ch: Chain
  • inc: Increase, 2 sc in the same stitch
  • inv dec: invisible decrease, decrease with only front loop
  • sl: slip stitch
  • FSC: foundation single crochet

Body: work in continuous round

  • Round 1: with color A, make magic circle, 6 sc (6)
  • Round 2: inc in every st (12)
  • Round 3: * sc in next st, inc * repeat 6 times (18)
  • Round 4: * sc in next 2 st, inc * repeat 6 times (24)
  • Round 5: * sc in next 3 st, inc * repeat 6 times (30)
  • Round 6: change to Color B, * sc in next 4 st, inc * repeat 6 times (36)
  • Round 7-10: sc in every st (36)
  • Round 11: * sc in next 4 st, inv dec * repeat 6 times (30)
  • Round 12: * sc in next 3 st, inv dec * repeat 6 times (24)
  • Round 13: * sc in next 2 st, inv dec * repeat 6 times (18) , at this time stuff the body with Poly-fill
  • Round 14: * sc in next st, inv dec * repeat 6 times (12)
  • Round 15: 6 inv dec (6)
  • Fasten off, pull tight and weave in end

Head:

  • Round 1: with color A, make magic circle, 6 sc (6)

  • Fasten off, leave long tail for sewing

Face:

  • Row 1: 10 FSC  (10) (or chain 11, turn, from 2nd chain 10 sc)
  • Row 2: ch1, turn, sc in every st (10)
  • Row 3: ch1, turn, sc in next 4 st, inc, inc, sc in last 4 st (12)
  • Row 4: ch1, turn, sc in next  4, inc (6) (only work on half of the face)
  • Row 5: ch1, turn, sc, 2dec, sc, sc (4)
  • Row 6: ch1, turn, sc, inv dec, sc (3)
  • Row 7: ch1, turn, sc, inv dec (2)
  • Fasten off.
  • on WS, leave 2 open st on row 4, inc, sc in last 4 (6), 12 total with Row 4 from above
  • follow row 5 – 7
  • Fasten off.
  • SC all around the face

Arms: (make 2)

  • Round 1: 4 sc in magic ring (4)
  • Round 2: inc in every st (8)
  • Round 3: * sc in next st, inc * repeat 4 times (12)
  • Round 4: * sc in next st, inv dec * repeat 4 times (8)
  • Round 5-8 : (optional: change color), sc in every st
  • sl st, fasten off, leave long tail for sewing , collapse and stitch the top opening close

Feet: (make 2)

  • Round 1: with color C, make magic circle, 6 sc (6)
  • Round 2: inc in every st (12)
  • Round 3: * sc in next st, inc * repeat 6 times (18)
  • Round 4: * sc in next 2 st, inv dec * repeat 6 times (12)
  • Round 5: * sc in next 2 st, inv dec * repeat 4 times (8)
  • Fasten off, leave long tail for weaving

Beak:

  • Round 1: 4 sc in magic ring (4)
  • Round 2: inc in every st (8)
  • Round 3: * sc in next st, inc * repeat 4 times (12)
  • Round 4: * sc in next st, inv dec * repeat 4 times (8)

Assemble:

Assemble the head first, sew face on to head, sew on beak in the valley area of the face. Use tapestry needle and thread to pull through eye position to make dent for eye (this can be skipped. Screw on safety eyes (9mm). Stuff the head with Poly-Fill.

Sew head on to the body, make sure the Color A is facing forward.

Sew on feet and arms.

I added a tail to keep the penguin balance, but it’s not necessary if your penguin on stand on the feet :).
